Glaucoma Surgery

Diagram showing the development of glaucoma, with healthy eye and glaucoma stages. The healthy eye has a clear flow of aqueous humor and open drainage canal. The glaucoma stage shows blocked drainage canal causing fluid buildup. Increased pressure damages blood vessels and optic nerve, indicated by red arrows inside the eye.

Overview of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. It is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve – the bundle of nerve fibres that carries information from your eye to your brain.

There are several types of Glaucoma, but the most common is primary open-angle Glaucoma. With this type, the part of your eye that drains fluid (the trabecular meshwork) becomes clogged, and fluid builds up in your eye. This raises the pressure inside your eye, damaging the optic nerve over time.

Glaucoma usually has no symptoms in the early stages, so regular comprehensive eye exams are essential. If caught early, primary open-angle Glaucoma can be treated with medicine or Surgery to lower eye pressure and protect your vision.
